Session #4 - Orc elimination
Jan. 14th, 2024 07:05 pm I decided to stay the night with Sidah in the woods, located to the west of Phandalin. I was concerned that he wouldn't be doing so well on his own, but the kobolt assured me that he has been traveling like this for a while, entirely on his own. I remain surprised at the fact that he speaks the language of orcs without having any memory of it. With an environment in constant danger by various types of monsters, but especially orcs, I am wondering how he has made it on his own for so long. Maybe he hid himself well or managed peace between him and the wandering folk, seeking for a home to name their own. We haven't figured out yet why it is that the orcs lost their homes. Could it be the dragon's doing?
After some refreshing morning stretches, we made our way to the inn where both Kyndel and Hemlock are staying the night, soon accompanied by Sister Yolantha and after some delicious breakfast, we left to meet the Guard Captain, usually stationed at the Town Hall. They use it as a temporary post, but once we got there, the man wasn't present. He had important business to take care of according to one of the guards that was stationed there.
During the captain's absence, the guard said, the Town Master is responsible for giving tasks to the adventurers, like ourselves. Before we left, Kyndel used this opportunity to tell the man his fortune in return for a small price. With the cards chosen and placed in front of the two, the fire genasi lifted the card and revealed the Tower. He promised the man that his day will be great, that the captain will praise him for his hard work. It casted a smile on the skeptical face upon hearing that, though according to the Sister, Kyndel has left out some details of the outcome, which he afterwards added, but he assured the man that he can expect only the best.
Kyndel and Sidah decided to take a walk around town, while the rest of us continued to the mansion where the Town Master is told to be present. When the Sister knocked on the door to see someone was inside, the door didn't open up, instead, we heard a voice. It was the man we were meant to talk with, however, he fears leaving the building or even opening up the door, no matter how the ladies tried to convince him of reality. But it was to our luck that it didn't interfere with our intentions, we simply exchanged the necessary documents from underneath the door.
The town master gave us three different quests, of which two are closest to the south and east of Phandalin, another one is positioned in the Neverwinter woods, with a request for supplies, but the one to the far east is of highest urgency. A ranch has been overrun and taken over by the orcs, we are urged to give them our support and to rid the place of the orcs.
With our promise still in mind that I urge each of them to keep, we must eventually return to the dwarves before they get into trouble. We lowered the priority for a little, realizing that rescuing people and escorting a man to the gold mine to the south, is both the closest and of priority. When both are taken care of, we'll obtain the necessary supplies from the guards.
When we regrouped with the other two, they let us know that they came in contact with the guard captain who became suspicious of Sidah for recognizing and mentioning the name of the white dragon that attacked us. He named him Cryovain, which I think is rather suitable, given that he passed us the traumatic frost experience of which my subconscious suffered more than I anticipated.
We let Sidah know that we don't suspect him of any of the sort, and wish to continue keeping him in our midths. After all, he is a part of us now and I do wish to keep him well fed as well. And not only that, if nobody else will, then I must protect him from false accusations. Torm's light shall bring shelter to those who seek.
We led them to the inn, where the man by the name Don-Jon Raskin was waiting for our support to escort him to safety. The sister went upstairs to inform the man of our arrival, while the rest waited at the entrance of the inn until we met the tall man with graying hair. On our way toward the exit of town, we were stopped in our path when two guards came to us with an intention to arrest Sidah, by the guard captain's direct commands. They were, however unsuccessful when a pair of smart words of our group confirmed the two, who were unsure themselves, to leave us with a situation where they couldn't catch us in time before we took our leave. They considered it and then let us go.
It was kind of them, each of them, both the guards and our group, they have a sweet soul. Warm, at the core, with no other reason to act, than willing what they believe is the right thing. The intention is what counts at the end of the day ...
. . .
We traveled toward the mountains, to where the gold mine is present, a location Kyndel was better off knowing, but the tall man, unfamiliar with the boy's behavior, was happy to explain where our destination was located. He didn't cut out any details of it either, after all, he is the overseer of the miners. The mention of gold got the fire genasi behaving a little odd, but nothing out of the ordinary. I'm sure he wouldn't abandon us just for gold! After all, he expressed that he enjoys the meals I pay!
Once we closed the distance to the mine, we came across a number of fallen orcs. Upon closer inspection from the sister, it became clear that these poor orcs became victims to the frost breath, in similar ways that both Sidah and I were, however, they weren't lucky to have such a helpful bunch of men and women. I didn't expect anything odd either, using my instincts granted by my faith (Divine Sense), so we continued our paths after a silent prayer.
At the gold mine, we were greeted by unfamiliar creatures who named the mine theirs. They name themselves wererats, having features of both rats mixed with those of humans. They weren't hostile when our group requested to speak to their leader. They let us, and we managed to meet the wererat that was wearing a purple cape. The wererats hissed at us, which I assume is a welcome in their language, but, a tad more aggressive, perhaps? We learned that their homeland, the shrine to the east, is taken over by orcs, not too far separated from the ranch. So, we made an exchange to remove the threat from their home, for a promise for them to return there, and letting the miners have the rest of the gold mine.
When I asked where the miners were, they kindly let us know that they are alive and have their own part of the gold mine, while they use it as their home. With the location marked on our map, we were sent off again, but with Mr. Raskin on our side. He let us know during the journey to the next destination, that he used to be an adventurer as well before he retired and insisted that he'll come with us, rather than stay behind with the miners. I apologized to him, but he said that he didn't mind helping us. I really appreciate that, but I truly feel guilty about letting a client work with us in dangerous surroundings. Those orcs were rather strong during that encounter ...
Before we'd reach the shrine, we stopped for the night and got some rest to get ourselves prepared for the upcoming fight. I decided to take the second watch and Kyndel was interested in spending that watch with me, I really appreciate his enthusiasm! After getting some worthy rest of my own, I was awoken by one of the ladies for my watch, and so was the fire genasi. We found ourselves in a good position with a clear view, a little higher onto the mountain, but no threat was near, which allowed us a little chat.
I've expressed my confusion related to what he named was a "Strikezone", which he mentioned around the religious worker that we rescued from the manticore at the tower. Kyndel was so kind as to explain this to me, using basic terms to avoid confusion, which was very considerate! This modern type of language really does keep confusing me, hahah! He was also curious, why I'm so keen on saving especially helpless women. It wasn't difficult, but I told him that I was once saved by women as a small child after my parents abandoned me in the forest of Cloakwood to fend for myself and he gave me some helpful insight. It could be, he said, that they had to abandon me to save me, to distract the monsters from finding me ... But I wondered, why did they not return?
They could have been ... Robbed from their life in an attempt to request for help. I was really lucky to be saved by Raina and Shefri and to call them my mothers, it's not unusual to develop a soft spot for women ... When truly, not all women are capable of fending themselves, neither are all men, but women, they are able to do good on so many special levels that none of us men could. I may be misled, after all, I made it my oath when both of their lives came to a natural end. Kindle asked about their race, which I answered is human and he asked for the age I have, two hundred and thirty, a number which exchanged a weakened expression. "My condolences."
I'm thankful for his feelings toward this fate, but I mustn't be sad neither must he, they would never want me or my close ones to be sad, they'd want to see me help the lives of others, like they once did to mine. I refuse to let them down. I won't let any of their lives come to an end if I can put a stop to it, may they all live a long life. May they find love, give love and maybe, one day, give life.
The night came to an end after the final watch and the early morning allowed us to enjoy the lovely stew that Don-Jon was so kind to prepare for us. A sweet gesture in which he thanked us for letting him rest the night with no dangers around. With our stomach filled, we continued our path toward the dangers and weren't disappointed when we moved inside reach. With a request for Torm's shield, I strengthened my defenses, and together with everyone, we shortened their numbers, little by little. We fought over ten orcs and two large ogres with excellent teamwork.
After an exhausting fight, we made our way inside, past the stench of death and remains of battle and made ourselves comfortable at the campfire which was still lit and smiled at each other. A rest well deserved! Hemlock played us a wonderful song (Song of Rest) that lifted the stress from our shoulders from the recent exposure to senseless combat and gore.
It's great to travel with them ...
After some refreshing morning stretches, we made our way to the inn where both Kyndel and Hemlock are staying the night, soon accompanied by Sister Yolantha and after some delicious breakfast, we left to meet the Guard Captain, usually stationed at the Town Hall.
