Session #3 - Tightened security
Jan. 14th, 2024 07:03 pm After we spent the night at Gnomengarde and gathered our belongings, Kindle read the gnomes their fortune and predicted a great breakthrough for their intentions. He didn't hesitate to make a show out of it either, turning it into a major spectacle while merely shuffling the cards. Flames would appear, disappear and so would the cards! It was amazing—!
The lady from the kitchen was so sweet to give us some of their mushroom bread for our way back again and said that we're always welcome to pay a visit, the bread will be in the house!
We left the gnomes to head back to Phandalin to report to the guard captain. When we returned, it seemed like the situation tightened around the town. People held crossbows and patrolled the town to make sure it stayed clear of danger. Through Sister Yolantha, we learned that the white dragon has been sighted in the regions and surrounding areas have become a larger threat again to the people.
We went to the town hall and informed the guard captain about our finds as well as the lacking details about our encounter with the dragon itself. We named it territorial and unwilling to negotiate with us to allow us passage. Questioning eyes have been resting on both the Kobalt and myself for having survived the attacks. Truly, that was rough luck and I did leave the boy a good word for good behavior. The captain split our reward of 50 gold among all five of us and already had more awaiting us.
Because of the dragon sightings in the region, two archeologist dwarves near a recently discovered, ancient temple that haven't been informed about the nearing threat. They must return to Phandalin.
As well as an older woman who is charged with the task to brew potions, living at a windmill South west of town, who must be escorted back to town.
We decided to take both the missions, but the order in which we took them wasn't a mutual agreement for a while, but after a good (expensive) meal (which is now my responsibility), we managed to get our plans straight and first headed to the Temple.
When we got there, we found two dwarves that didn't seem too happy about receiving guests, neither the new information about the dragon sightings. They refuse to go back, claiming that they are close to a breakthrough in their finds. The make dwarf has discovered the entrance that would lead inside the temple, but they spoke of monsters which could trouble them when they seek shelter. Something about a slime.
We went inside the temple to clear it from any threat. I saw that one of them was behind the altar and I warned the others beforehand before I got in reach to draw its attention away from the others. It made its appearance to us. A second one appeared, but we made quick work of them. Kindle and the others continued to explore the temple, refusing to listen to me when I made sure it was safe for the time being, but the boy continued to search and found some hidden passages from behind the walls, leading to a number of rooms. He found a small knife, like a ritual knife with dwarven writing on it. It demands a blood sacrifice as the story goes and that Kindle made when he cut himself and used the dwarf to help him pronounce the words "Greed is Good" to animate the knife. It aimed at the pillar with a switch. 15 Gems and 30 dwarven skills came out of the altar. We took the gems and considered waiting to remove the rumble from behind the door in the back until we helped the woman.
On our way out of the temple, we encountered orcs that named themselves members of the Blackrock clan and demanded us to leave, as they were chased from their lands, with no place, but any location of their choice to stay.
We fought them, realizing quickly that their strength nearly outmatched mine. I nearly fell unconscious with a single hit, but with our might combined, we managed to turn the tables and secured the area.
We went straight to the windmill with a brief rest to recover from the damage we have suffered. Once arrived, it became clear that the woman was already under attack. But not by a dragon, instead, it was a manticore With a terrifying face. It was making an attempt to break through the door where the lady was in, she begged for help.
We hurried to her and defeated the beast before it could manage to attack us, letting Sister Yolantha land the final, impressive strike. We rushed to the woman, notifying her of the news, but she, too, wanted to remain where she was. It is a place of worship, she must protect, but it is also a farm, where she grows crops for potion brewing which she refused to abandon. With the situation as it is now, however, she is unable to survive on her own. Both the Sister and I managed to convince her and put her belongings and herbs into a cart, pulled by Side and later by me, and moved back to Phandalin.
We reported back to the captain again, then called it a night. I wonder what tomorrow will bring. I'm really excited!
